How to Make Fitness a Lifestyle

01.06.17

The new year is an opportunity for reflection, change, and self-improvement. Make 2017 the year you commit to a healthier lifestyle and stick with it. Here are a few tips on how to conquer your goals.

Make Goals

Already know the goals you want to reach? Congratulations! You’re already on your way towards success. Take it from NYHRC 13th St. Personal Trainer, Matt Smedra: “Whether it’s setting a certain amount of weight you want to squat, or improving your mile time, make a specific performance goal to motivate you to go to the gym.”

Create a Schedule

Be sure to set aside a specific time for the gym and create a routine. According to Matt, “creating a set time for the gym will make you feel more obligated to go. Especially if you put it on your calendar and set reminders. Eventually, it will become a habit and you’ll look forward to each workout.”

Make Exercise a Priority

Make working out non-negotiable. No more excuses, think positively and always be prepared. Bring your workout clothes to work to maximize your time.

Log Activity and Results

Tracking your workouts and nutrition will help you stay focused and keep you motivated. Download the NYHRC app to view and choose classes, create goals, and track progress.

Find a Buddy

Find a workout buddy and boost your accountability network. There’s nothing better than working out and catching up with a friend. And don’t be afraid to tell others about your progress, too, whether it’s on social media or face to face.

Reward Yourself

Reward yourself for hitting daily exercise goals. Try a post-workout smoothie, massage or relaxing in the sauna or whirlpool.

Have Fun

Don’t forget about the most important key to fitness success: fun! Create a playlist of your favorite upbeat songs or download a podcast. As Matt explains, “if you have fun while working out, you will be a lot more likely to stick with it.
